First, UNM has a deficit of several million dollars and now the Basketball Coach wants loads more money to renovate the luxury boxes at the Pit?
Paul Weir Has Lost His Mind!
Paul Weir, coach of the UNM basketball team, has proposed remodeling the Pit to accommodate offices for the basketball coaching staff. He approached the UNM Regents with taking the 16 unsold skyboxes and turning them into offices for the basketball coaches.Now, you have to remember, the coaches have perfectly good offices over at the Davalos Center. Weir says the offices are not good enough – small and not sound proof. So rather than fixing those offices that are next to the practice areas of the basketball teams, he wants to spend $2M on new offices.
You also have to remember, that four sports were just killed because of not enough money. He wants to use $150,000 of UNM sports money and the rest from private funds. Maybe private money could have saved the four teams? UNM sports has been told they are still in the money hole and more teams could be cut.
Do they need new offices? Why not try to sell those unused skyboxes to generate funds? Are they too lazy and want to go to Scotland, golfing instead?
So what if the money isn’t used on students? Who cares about them? The purpose of universities is not teaching BUT SPORTS! Even if you are at the bottom! Weir just sees a big cash cow! What is wrong with UNM?
