Each year the New Mexico Department of Agriculture awards deserving people that had an influence on the western way of life, the Rounders Award. The Rounders Award was named after the famous Max Evans book and movie, The Rounders, and created in 1990.

This year NM Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte presented The Rounders Award to Jim Harris, Curtis Fort, and Rosemary Wilkie.

Harris is the author and editor of 12 books and currently writes columns for two Lea County newspapers. Harris is also the Director of the Lea County Museum.

Curtis Fort is a nationally recognized bronze sculptor in western themes of monumental size. Fort is also a rancher and cowboy.

Rosemary Wilkie is a master known master saddle maker. She is a 1994 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Folk Art Heritage Award. She is also a boot-maker.

The State of New Mexico and the Ag Department are to be congratulated for recognizing these icons of western culture.
