Jury Duty

As if my life wasn’t complicated enough with the accident, I have jury duty for the whole month of December! This is my third time in 28 years and my husband has never been called. I have to admit I kinda like it because I learn a lot. But there is a LOT of down time. And with no car, I can’t go out for lunch so I have to plan ahead! When you get your jury duty Summons, there is a tremendously long and involved questionnaire. I understand the need (for lawyers to see) but knowing about your neighbors, is over the line.

I wasn’t called on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. I pity the people who aren’t ready for the holidays because you can’t plan. I, however, buy all year so it is no biggie. In each gang of jurors there may be hundreds of people. You meet in a large room after checking in and wait until you group is called. And yes, you get paid $7.50 an hour and mileage if you go more than 40 miles to get to the court building. Your job is to also check the District Court Petit Jury Daily Schedule, after 4:30 pm every day, to see if you have to go in the next day.

And don’t even think about blowing off jury duty because they will get you. However if you have vacation or business trips planned it is no problem to get excused. If you are sick during jury duty or a major problem comes up there is a phone number to call.
